Using a HTC Device As A Modem under Apple's OS X

In the UK T-Mobile provide an unlimited 3G/HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) Internet connectivity on their handsets for just £7.50 a month.

This makes it a superb way to get Internet connectivity for your laptop, almost anywhere in the UK.

A Macbook with bluetooth, paired with my MDA Vario II (aka HTC Hermes) provides a solid data connection.

To get OS X and the MDA Vario II talking you'll need an OS X modem script. The modem scripts for various mobile phones (and other devices) live in "/Library/Modem Scripts"

  • First up you need to make sure your mobile phone is set-up correctly.
On the phone do the following:
    • Go to 'Settings', then select the 'Connections' tab.
    • Select 'Beam' and enable 'Receive all incoming beams'. Press 'ok' to return to the settings page.
    • Go to 'Bluetooth' settings. On the 'Mode' tab make sure your phone is 'discoverable to other devices', then select the 'COM Ports' tab. Set up an new Incoming Port (COM0).
  • Grab the compatible iPAQ/HTC modem script from here.
  • Copy the "iPAQ GSM/iPAQ GSM" file to "/Library/Modem Scripts", and in the process you can rename the script to something more logical. From a Terminal shell type:
    cp iPAQ\ GSM/iPAQ\ GSM "/Library/Modem Scripts/HTC Modem"
  • Under Mac OS X (using 10.4.9 here) run the System Preferences, selecting 'Bluetooth' and then the 'Devices' tab. Click 'Setup New Device...' to begin the Bluetooth pairing process.
  • When prompted choose Any Device when asked to select the device type. HTC devices don't seem to identify themselves correctly as a phone.
  • Select your HTC device from ther list of available Bluetooth devices, mine always shows up as just a MAC address.
  • On the next page ensure 'Access the Internet with your phone's data connection' is checked.
  • Enter the following values in to the fields:

    Username: tmobile
    Password: tmobile
    Phone Number: *99#

  • Select "HTC Modem" from the avalable scripts drop-down menu.
  • In System Preferences > Network > Bluetooth, in the PPP tab click on PPP Options and make sure that Use TCP header compression is unchecked.
  • Go to the Bluetooth Modem tab and make sure that Use TCP header compression is unchecked. Disable both Enable error correction and compression in modem and Wait for dial tone before dialing and apply your changes.
