VMWare ESXi and Windows XP Pro
I have been installing lots of virtual machines on my FREE VMware ESXi server. Most guest OS's install great but I had a problem with Windows XP Pro 32-bit.
When you go through the install Windows XP does not find any hard disks and therefore will not install.
What you need to do is download a file called vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp and then in the virtual machine setup make sure the floppy setup looks at the contents of the zip file. Then press F6 during install and it will read the file and then find the virtual hard disk.
Outlook Auto Complete
So you have a new pc or a new Outlook profile. You login to your mailbox, all your data is there but your auto complete list which Outlook auto generates has gone, what a pain.
This is actually easy to get back and is basically just a file stored in your user profile on your pc.
Browse to :
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Look for a file called Outlook.NK2
The name might be different to that but will still have the same extension of .NK2
Copy or rename the file to it matches your Outlook profile name.
Show desktop icon missing & How to recreate
I've seen the 'show desktop' icon disappear on both XP and Windows 2003 server now, and have no idea why this annoying thing randomly happens but do have the solution to fix it.
Yes I know you can press Windows+M but I personally use this shortcut a lot so want it back. There are a few solutions to this but I couldn't get them to work in Vista, this works in 98/2000/XP/Vista.
The fix is:
[Shell] Command=2 IconFile=explorer.exe,3 [Taskbar]
ADprep with Windows 2003 R2
When trying to bring another DC online to active directory via DCPromo I kept getting an error message telling me to run forest and domainprep even though I had already done so.
Before you can introduce Windows Server 2003 domain controllers, you must prepare the forest and domains with the ADPrep utility.
ADPrep /forestprep on the schema master in your Windows 2000 forest. ADPrep /domainprep on the Infrastructure Master in each AD domain.
How To Remove Internet Explorer 7 (IE7)
You've probably had Microsoft's latest Internet Explorer 7 browser forced upon your Windows desktop recently.
Since then you may have noticed that some of the software which embeds the browser into the application no longer wants to play ball - or spits scripting errors at you now.
If the application doesn't have an update available, or they are charging big money for the latest update you might have considered just un-installing IE7 and going back to the good old days.
Activesync, SSL, root certs and a general big pain
So you've got your brand spanking new PDA or phone with push email thinking it will work nicely out of the box with exchange.....wrong!
i386\asms issues installing XP
3 CD's later and after 2 hours of searching and messing I finally got this sorted.
Basically I had some ISO images on a network drive of the various versions of XP, since its so fussy about volume/academic/OEM and retail media it means I had to have several.
So since these CDs get scratched lost I had to burn another one, after burning it with Nero I get to 39% of the install then it fails with a redundancy check for i386\asms
On this screen you can press shift+F10 to get a console up, upon CD'ing to the directory I could see the ASMS folder and the various files within it.
The suggestions I found were to:
Sku011.cab
Stupid annoying error upon installation - on a clean install or when setting up outlook under a new profile for example. If like me you were miles away from the office or lost the CD this can be a PAIN, after searching for hours I thought I'd make a note of this both for the future and to help others having the same problem.
