Show desktop icon missing & How to recreate

Thu, 2007-03-22 18:26 — superuser

I've seen the 'show desktop' icon disappear on both XP and Windows 2003 server now, and have no idea why this annoying thing randomly happens but do have the solution to fix it.

Yes I know you can press Windows+M but I personally use this shortcut a lot so want it back. There are a few solutions to this but I couldn't get them to work in Vista, this works in 98/2000/XP/Vista.

The fix is:

  • Open Notepad
  • Copy and Paste the following in (including the [Shell] & [Taskbar] parts)
  • [Shell]
    Command=2
    IconFile=explorer.exe,3
    [Taskbar]
    Command=ToggleDesktop

  • Save the file on Desktop as desktop.scf (make sure you change the save as type in notepad to all files so you don't save the file as desktop.scf.txt)
  • Drag the file (with the right mouse button) the to the Quick Launch toolbar and select copy here and the show desktop shortcut will be recreated (if you don't copy and simply drag the file you are creating a shortcut to the file, and if its on your desktop you'll probably delete it)
